How To Actually Share Digital Games On The PlayStation 4 [Tutorial]
Let’s face it; SONY has been very lenient with its digital game sharing policies in the past. PlayStation 3 owners who would purchase digital games from the PlayStation Store are rather fortunate. The ability to share digital games with another PlayStation 3 console owner allows the cost of a game to be split between two console owners.
Needless to say, that also saves the second player the full cost of a game that would have to be paid otherwise. Purchase and download a game under your PSN ID and simply share your PSN ID with a trustworthy friend who can download the same game by signing in under your PSN ID and later play it while sign in from his/her own PSN ID. It is this simple with the PS3.
SONY seems to have gotten a bit strict with its plans for the online on PlayStation 4 as it has made PlayStation Plus service mandatory for anyone who wishes to go online. This might be a bummer for some but for those who have been fortunate to have experienced PS Plus would most probably not feel at loss under the assumption that they would have carried on with their subscriptions given the insane amounts of amenities that SONY offers in return.
Seemingly, the idea of Primary PS4 is also a bit bothersome for a few users. In presence of these small but noticeable complications, people are all at sea about the way digital game sharing works on the PS4. Quite frankly, there’s hardly any authentic material posted on the internet that helps with that. In that case, let this be your Primary guide (pun intended).
Let’s assume you and friend A are proud owners of a PS4 (each) and the PS Plus membership (each) ofcourse. Create two user accounts on your PS4, one that you use with your own PSN details (PSN ID and Password) and another with friend A’s PSN details.
Make sure that you register the user account associated with friend A’s PSN details as the Primary PS4; NOT your own. Do the same with friend B’s PS4 – create two user accounts ; one with your PSN details and another with his/her PSN details, BUT register the user account containing YOUR PSN details as the Primary PS4 on friend A’s PS4.
If the game is to be bought under your PSN ID, friend B must sign in on his/her PS4 using YOUR PSN details to purchase and download the game. No need to stay signed in while the download goes on, mind you. Now you follow the same procedure on your own PS4 using the user account associated with YOUR PSN ID.
In case friend A’s account is to be used for the purchase, you must sign in on your own PS4 with the user account associated with friend A’s PSN ID to purchase and download a game. Sign out and let friend A sign in using the user account associated with friend A’s PSN ID on his/her own PS4 to download the game.
Once the game is downloaded and installed, you and friend A are free to sign in using your own respective accounts to play the game, simultaneously. Voila! It’s a bit of a mouthful but it works!
