Famous Actors Playing Their Roles In Their Very First Movies

One often wishes to have witnessed some famous actors playing their roles in their very first movies. There’s absolutely no denying that Hollywood has produced some of the finest actors over the years. This post takes you on a stroll down the memory lane to show you a glimpse of some famous actors in Hollywood and their first appearances on television.

Ben Affleck

Affleck kicked off his film career with a role in an independent movie by the name, ‘Dark Side of the Street’ back in 1981. Aged 7 at the time, the child actor made quite the name for himself before he was offered a significant role in ‘The Voyage of the Mimi, a PBS children’s series. Little did he know that he would grow up to play Bruce Wayne by day and Batman by night.

Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. made his screen debut when he was only aged 5 with a movie called ‘Pound’ in 1970. The film was directed as well as written by Robert Downey Sr. The little boy only got one line in the movie which was: “Have any hair on your balls?” Come to think of it, that exactly sounds like something a witty Robert Downey Jr. would say.

Angelina Jolie

It’s not surprising that the daughter of actor Jon Voight made an early screen debut when she was merely 7 years old. Jolie played the role of a little girl named Tosh in a feature film called ‘Lookin’ to get out’ which was released in 1982. Her father also starred in the movie which might well have made this first acting experience slightly easier for her.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Although DiCaprio auditioned for the movie ‘The Outsiders’ in 1983 at 9 years of age, he failed to get the role. He had to make a start with various educational films, commercials and supporting cast member of a sitcom called ‘Growing Pains’ in 1985. He did not get a part on the bigger screen until 1989 where he was cast in a couple of episodes of ‘The New Lassie’.

Jake Gyllenhaal

Gyllenhaal had successfully auditioned for the movie called ‘The Mighty Ducks’ but his parents refused to let him play the role which required him to be away for a couple of months. He did not have to worry much about having lost one opportunity given that his family had deep ties with the industry. Instead, he started his career at the age of 11 in his role in a comedy movie called ‘City Slickers’ in 1991.

Scarlett Johansson

Johansson was only 9 years of age when she starred in a fantasy comedy called ‘North’ which aired in 1994. She had auditioned for commercials before this but she failed to get the part. Her mother was worried by the fact that she didn’t take the rejection lightly so she began to take her to movie tryouts.

Nicolas Cage

Cage made his first appearance on screen when he was 17. His first role was in ABC’s comedy film Best of times’. It features him working out like there’s no tomorrow, dancing in a supermarket and also delivering inspirational speeches. The movie happened to be the first to feature Crispin Glover as well. It’s amazing to witness one of the most famous actors coming such a long way after playing their roles in their first movies.

James Franco

Franco only pursued an acting career once he was dropped out of UCLA. He had to work a late night job at McDonald’s to afford the rent and his acting classes. The first role he landed was a TV commercial for Pizza Hut. This opened bigger gates as he was offered guest roles on various TV shows shortly after.

Tom Hanks

Hanks was 23 when he moved to New York in 1979 for his role in a low budget film. This was his very first appearance in a movie called ‘He knows you’re alone’ which was released the next year.

Morgan Freeman

Freeman made his very first appearance on screen back in 1964 as an extra in the movie ‘The Pawnbroker’. He was later offered significant roles that earned him quite the popularity among the American public. These include PBS kids show ‘The Electric Company’ from 1971, ‘Mel mounds the DJ’, ‘Vincent The Vegetable Vampire’ and ‘Easy Reader’.

Isn’t it just fascinating to catch a glimpse of these famous actors playing their roles in their very first movies?
